It's Time for Power Seeding!

Lawn Doctor Power Seeding Services will increase turf density and improve the overall health and appearance of your yard. A dense lawn is the best natural defense against weed and insect damage. As your lawn ages, individual grass plants weaken and die, which can result in a thin, unhealthy lawn.
Turf Tamer® Power Seeder

Lawn Doctor has developed our patented Turf Tamer® power seeder to provide customers with the best lawn power seeding results possible. Our power seeder's reciprocating action prepares the seed bed for maximum seed germination without damaging existing turf. The ground-metered distribution process delivers exactly the right amount of seed to encourage plant development and lawn aeration.

The Optimal Time for Power Seeding Lawns

Fall is the best time for power seeding your lawn. First, power seeding will help influence the lawn's look for the following spring. Second, due to its warm days, cool nights and ample precipitation, fall is also ideal for proper germination and early turf development. In addition, grass seed sown in the fall can establish itself more quickly, due to reduced competition from broadleaf weeds.

Franchisee Bio: Jack Wooden, Lawn Doctor Franchisee of Columbus, IN

A seasoned entrepreneur, Jack Wooden has owned many different types of businesses. From home remodeling to hearing aids, Wooden is no stranger to starting up successful companies. Now as a Lawn Doctor franchisee, Wooden offers his community a trusted service to provide a healthy and happy lawn.

Q: What were your careers before franchising?
I have always been a business owner. Up until 1987, I owned a home remodeling business in Baltimore, where I grew up. After that I sold the remodeling business, and I owned a retail hearing aid business in western Maryland. I currently own an online advertising sales company. The business has done very well, but recently I have been looking for something that I could do in addition to advertising sales, and Lawn Doctor was the right opportunity.

Q: How did you learn about the brand?
I first heard about Lawn Doctor in 2006, but I wasn’t ready to look into owning a franchise. This past year I decided that the timing was right for me to explore other options. I had in business ownership and revisited the Lawn Doctor brand. After researching several different franchises, I realized that Lawn Doctor afforded me the flexibility to continue with my current ad sales business while running a Lawn Doctor franchise. This is possible because of the proven systems Lawn Doctor has in place.

Q: What is appealing to you about joining a franchise system?
The most important thing to me about becoming part of a franchise system is the help that I am going to receive in every aspect of running a lawn care business. In the other businesses that I have owned, I made many mistakes on my own and there was no one there to guide me on how they could be prevented. With Lawn Doctor, they are going to guide me through every aspect of the business, agronomy, technology, sales and marketing until I am ready to do it on my own. I wouldn’t be able to go into the lawn care industry without their help.

Q: With respect to your previous experience, what skills do you feel will help you with your business?
My experience with owning different types of businesses will give me an advantage. I’ve been involved with many different startups, so I’m familiar with the work that it takes to get a company off the ground. I also have experience in marketing, and I really think that Lawn Doctors approach to marketing is great. Also, managing customers can be difficult, but Lawn Doctor and I share a similar approach to customer service in that it’s one of the most important parts of the business.

Q: How is your business different?
In this area, people take great care of their lawns. Some even view it as a competition to see who can have the healthiest and greenest lawns. I want Lawn Doctor to help people in the community achieve not only the desired look of their lawn but also to keep it healthy and happy.

Quick Tips for a Fall Friendly Lawn

As one of the hottest summers in our nation’s history draws to a close, it’s inevitable that your lawn has taken quite the beating this season. All summer long the sun’s rays wreak havoc on your grass, leaving it parched and dry.

Going into fall, it’s important that you take preventative action to make sure that your grass will be prepared for the long winter months and will have the proper nutrients to help it looking as healthy as possible next summer.

In preparation for the changing seasons, Lawn Doctor, the nation’s largest lawn care franchise, supplies some tips for homeowners on repairing your damaged summer lawn to ensure its full recovery come spring.

“Mending your lawn before winter arrives is important because more often than not, homeowners don’t realize the serious harm their lawn has endured throughout the summer,” said John Buechner, Lawn Doctor’s chief lawn care expert. “Your lawn should receive much needed attention to restore its health before winter hits. The key is to understand the importance of fertilizing and aerating.”

As summer fades out and temperatures start to yield to the cooler fall weather, the upkeep and restoration of your lawn should still remain a high priority. To repair the summer damage and to revitalize your lawn this fall, Buechner suggests the following tips:

• Add Seed: The heat can cause sparse and even bare spots on your lawn. To make sure that your lawn will be spot free next spring, it’s important to add seed now. To cut down on time, consider professional power seeding from your local Lawn Doctor lawn care professional for a thorough application.

• Remove Leaves: As leaves begin to fall it’s important to remove them quickly before a thick layer has a chance to develop on top of your lawn. Leaves and other debris from trees can smother your grass and prohibit your lawns ability to store food for the winter.

• Fertilize: As your lawn prepares for winter, it will begin to store food so fertilizing your lawn becomes a necessity. Fertilizing helps your lawn store as much food as possible for the winter months which will lead to a speedy, green recovery come spring.

• Aerate: In order to fully restore, your lawn needs maximum access to oxygen and nutrients. By aerating your lawn, your grass has access to just what it needs to revitalize itself from the summer heat before fall sets in.

• Trees and Shrubbery: Before the weather gets too chilly, it’s a good idea to treat your trees and shrubs with anti-desiccant spray, which prevents moisture loss throughout the winter.

Franchisee Profile: Dan & Kim Toth, Lawn Doctor Franchisees of Batavia and Aurora, Illinois

Q: What were your careers before franchising?

Kim: I had a variety of experiences before deciding to go into franchising with Lawn Doctor. I worked in health care, television, customer relations, real estate, market research, child care, and education. I met Dan while working in New York, then moved to Dan’s hometown of Chicago, where I earned my graduate degree in education at Loyola. I taught high school biology at Lane Technical High School in Chicago. I am now a stay at home mom taking care of our three school age children.

Dan: I spent the first 18 years of my career in consulting and the last 4 years managing customer care and operations departments for one of the three large credit bureaus. My experience covers setting up and running the operations for a variety of large national and international businesses. I have always been interested in owning and operating my own business.

Q: How did you learn about the brand?

Dan: I have always managed the care for our own lawn and landscape. I have used a number of lawn care services but have not been pleased with the results and quality of service. Kim and I found Lawn Doctor while searching for providers that offered more eco-friendly options in lawn care. We realized there wasn’t a Lawn Doctor in our area, so we began to look into the franchise opportunity for ourselves.

Q: Why was this brand the right fit for you?

Dan: We believe in the products and services Lawn Doctor offers and the support provided through their franchise model. A Lawn Doctor franchise fit well with our interests to own and operate our own business.

Kim: One of the reasons that we began looking at the Lawn Doctor website was in the search for more natural lawn care options. Our oldest son has had a lot of health care issues and we were concerned about the use of lawn care products in our own lawn. We are pleased that Lawn Doctor is focused on customizing lawn care to protect the environment and health of future generations.

Q: In regard to your previous experience, what skills do you feel will help you with your business?

Kim: Relationships are very important to me. My experience working in customer relations and in education is something I really enjoyed. I’m excited to have the opportunity to build personal relationships with friends and neighbors in our community. We want to listen to what people really want in their lawn care services and treat them the way we would want to be treated.

Dan: I have the skills and experience to lead and manage all functions of the business. I will decide on our marketing strategy and tactics sell our products and services, service customers, manage the technicians, and monitor and manage our financial performance.

Q: How is your business different?

Dan: We are a locally owned and operated business with the backing and resources of a major national brand with over 40 years of experience in the lawn care industry. We will care for our customer’s lawns like we care for ours.

Kim: As Batavia residents since 1995, we are very involved in the community and enjoy volunteering in our church and the local schools. We expect to help our neighbors and friends by providing great service. The quality of the Lawn Doctor brand is what will really set us apart.
